We have compiled a list of links to some great informational sites to help enhance your family's outdoor experience.  It is amazing to see the world thorugh the eyes of a child. Explore the world as a family!
 
National Parks and Recreation Areas:
Park Net- Take a tour through the National Park System, explore historical places and learn about natural resources in our parks.

WebRangers- If you go to a national park, you can join a Junior Ranger program. There are three levels of activities, grouped by age. The activities are grouped into "Ranger Stations." Complete all of the activities in one ranger station to qualify for an award.

Hiking and Backpacking:
A Walk In the Woods- Walk in the Woods is designed for students to gain an appreciation of nature. Sometimes students are not able to go to a forest preserve or woods, so this brings the woods to you.

American Hiking Society- Whether you enjoy day hikes in area parks or week-long backpacking trips in the wilderness, American Hiking Society is working every day to make sure your next hike is your best one yet.

Hiking Clubs and Associations– Links by State to all regional hiking clubs and associations via the American Hiking Society website.

Backpacker Magazine– Backpacker online is a great source of information on hiking.  There is limited information on families and kids, but it has some good hiking resources. 

Backpacking Light- This is another great online and print magazine with reviews of gear and information.  There is very little information on kids or family stuff except for one great article.  (Lightweight backpacking with young children)
 
Conservation
EPA - Kids' Stuff- This EPA – Office of Water’s web page has links to games and activities that will help you learn about drinking water.

Splash- Desdemona's Splash! This is a game about water quality and the environment and is a wonderful way to interactively teach both kids and adults how to reduce runoff pollution to protect our water resources.

Wild Life:
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service- Especially for Kids!- Learn about endangered species, national wildlife refuges, migratory birds, fisheries resources , the value of wetlands, and how kids, like you, can help.

Woodsy Owl- Woodsy Owl is a whimsical fellow.  He's got his heart set on motivating kids to form healthy, lasting relationships with nature. Woodsy encourages youngsters to marvel at and explore the natural world, even in the city. His new motto, "Lend a Hand--Care for the Land," encourages everyone to make a positive difference in the world.
 
Water Safety
Safe Boating Council- Here you will pick up tips on boating education and safety awareness and more.

Boating Sidekicks- Quiz yourself on the different types of floatation devices and boats, find out how long you can hold your breath, learn the different parts of a boat and what boating signals mean.

Travel:
Travel for Kids– This is a great site for information on traveling with kids.  This is a super resource for taking your adventures on the road.

CDC Traveling with Children– The CDC has some good resources and information when traveling with children.  Make sure to check this out prior to traveling abroad with children.

Kids Health and Safety: 
BAM!– is a site created by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to teach kids about their health and ways to stay active and safe.
 
Kids Magazines
National Geographic Kids - National Geographic Kids is an interactive, multitopic magazine covering animals, entertainment, science, technology, current events, and cultures from around the world. National Geographic Kids is the magazine that makes it fun to learn about the world.

Gorp Family– Lots of great links and information for families but lots of pop ups and advertising.  Good articles and reviews.
